Kent Adult Education

Kent Adult Education provides thousands of wide-ranging and challenging courses across Kent, covering everything from Arts & Crafts to Business and IT. The team needed a redevelopment of their existing site as the outdated CMS was struggling to cater for their evolving requirements. As courses are paid for online, we helped them create a flexible, ecommerce site alongside a logo refresh and advertising material.

Complex systems made easy

KAE’s complex requirements, based on their ever-evolving course list, schedule and payment functionality, meant that several different integrations were necessary. Their previous bespoke CMS was no longer supported, and there was a disjointed connection between the CMS and a third-party system that managed course information. The team required a site that imported real-time course data so that it was directly manageable in the CMS. The site also needed to link with Capita, a platform that managed their payment and user systems. Alongside a complex and thorough discovery phase, we created a user-friendly site that integrated these different systems seamlessly, so that it was more accessible and easy to use for both users and the KAE team.

User-informed design

We always design with a user-focused mentality, ensuring that regardless of what device a user is on, the journey is equally clear and efficient. The old KAE site had separate mobile and desktop versions to try and help manage the quantity of information. We knew that when creating a single responsive site, there had to be different treatments on the navigation across devices to efficiently direct traffic.

Prior to the design phase, we worked with the KAE team on a series of wireframes that mapped out key user journeys and simplified the experience. Large buttons and careful use of their bold colour palette creates obvious signposting to key areas of interest. A continued use of icons helps the experience to feel the same across tablet and mobile devices where screen space is more limited.

Influencing offline

As part of the website redevelopment project, we helped KAE give their logo a refresh so that it was more suitable for the web. This evolution of their brand was continued into the design of the site which, in turn, influenced the direction of their offline materials. With a focus on clean, geometric shapes and a bold, confined colour palette, we created a design direction that felt comprehensive and recognisable as their own. Following on from the website build, we were excited to continue to work with the team on further projects; including an email template and a marketing campaign to help encourage engagement.
